EASTERN VIEW HIGH SCHOOL

 Update Response, April 19, 2020

Students Scheduled to Graduate with the 2019-2020 Cohort

The following graduation requirements are waived per VDOE.

  • Students currently enrolled in a course for which they need a standard or verified credit in order to graduate;
  • Students who have successfully completed a course required for graduation, but have not earned the associated verified credit;
  • Students who have not completed the student-selected test;
  • Students who are currently enrolled in or have previously completed a course leading to a CTE credential necessary for a Standard Diploma but have not yet earned the credential;

Additional information about senior grades:

  • Senior final grades will be closed as of March 13 (Q3).
  • Students will be allowed the opportunity to make-up missed assignments or any type of work when facing reasonable barriers to graduation to improve grades.
  • Senior teachers must contact Mrs. Stone for grade changes to Q3.

Students in Cohort 2021 or After

  • We must ensure that students have completed a majority of required standards, competencies or objectives, including those that are essential for the success in subsequent coursework (Majority is not defined but in the mathematical arena or in the business arena, I would say 51%). Although 51% is not enough knowledge or skill to be successful in subsequent coursework, for example, such as Spanish 1 to Spanish 2, it is crucial to extend the learning during the school closure.

  • All teachers must identify the specific required content that had not been taught as of Friday, March 13th; and develop learning modules to address the missing content for the continuation of learning at home that is essential for the success in subsequent coursework.

  • Most of you have found ways to deliver instruction and it is awesome. Please continue to do what you are doing. We are not suggesting a specific instructional delivery mode, delivery could be face-to-face, blended, or self-paced assignments.

  • Please keep in mind that we are required to provide equitable access to all learners, including all subgroups.

  • Due to the loss of Q4 and the opportunity for students to improve their grades, make-up work is permitted for all learners for Q3.

Dual Enrollment, Advanced Placement, Virtual Virginia, APEX, PLATO Courses

  • In an effort to be equitable, we will also close out grades for all students in DE, AP, VV, APEX and PLATO as of March 13th (Q3). We are in communication with VV about impact and process due to equity questions.
  • Students are permitted to make-up assignments to improve their Q3 grades.
  • DE students will receive the weighted grade for graduation requirements (standard weighted credit).
  • However, GCC has no plans to cancel any dual enrolled courses at this time.  GCC plans to move forward with instruction via other modes of instructional delivery and assessment. They are willing to work with students that may have difficulty securing internet access should they decide to continue with course work.
  • AP courses; The College Board plans to administer a truncated exam (45 minutes online exam). Teachers must continue instruction of remaining content or objectives in order for students to maintain and be ready for the exam. Additional information about the exam will be communicated by College Board in the near future.

Expectations for Teachers during School Closure

  • Must identify the specific required content that had not been taught or assessed as of Friday, March 13, 2020.
  • Develop learning modules to address the missing content (Q4 objectives that are necessary).
  • Ensure that there is equitable access and support for all learners.
  • Utilize instructional delivery methods that works best for your content area and for all learners.
  • The VDOE does not recommend grading work completed during the closures since school is closed. Teachers are to grade assignments as feedback only to all students in continuing thinking, learning, and inquiry.
  • Provide a minimum of 1 to 2 activities per week and feedback to students on their learning.
