Dominion Energy Envirothon inspires students to develop environmental skills and solutions

Eastern View High School (EVHS) placed third overall in Virginia’s 2024 Dominion Energy Envirothon State Competition. They also placed 1st in Oral Presentation as well as third in aquatics, forestry and soils. The competition, administered by the Virginia Association of Soil & Water Conservation Districts, was held at Radford University on May 19 & 20, 2024.  Eastern View competed with teams representing 18 different high schools throughout Virginia.

Envirothon competitions consist of five “in-the-field” test stations – soils, wildlife, aquatics, forestry and a current environmental issue – which challenge teams to answer questions in both written and hands-on formats. During an oral presentation, teams present their environmental solution to industry and natural resource professionals who serve as judges. The issue for the 2024 Dominion Energy Envirothon was “Renewable Energy for a Sustainable Future.”  Teams presented solutions to address a renewable energy scenario for the Hampton Roads area of Virginia.

The EVHS team, coached by Science teacher Rachel Stuart, included Max Clements, Brett Howell, Kaz Norrod, Lincoln Stuart and Grace Warner.   Their proposal involved using wave technology to boost energy efficiency at the Virginia Beach offshore wind farm. Named “Team Waterspouts,” they placed second in the regional competition in April to earn their spot in May’s State level competition.

Stephanie DeNicola, Education and Information Coordinator for Culpeper Soil and Water Conservation District, noted “Eastern View has a long history of high achieving Envirothon teams. This team in particular had a solution to the Presentation Scenario that was inventive, unique and logical. Their solution could actually go a long way in addressing renewable energy. I am exceptionally proud of this year’s Envirothon program and can’t wait to see these young adults impact their communities.”

“Protecting the environment and supporting local communities are key components of our mission.” said Hunter A. Applewhite, president of the Dominion Energy Charitable Foundation. “Envirothon proudly promotes both as these students will become future leaders of environmental sustainability.”
