Two Eastern View High School students, Jaxson Norrod and Natalie Ferlazzo, stand beside their science fair projects at the Mountain Vista Governor’s School Regional Science Fair. Jaxson, wearing a dark suit and tie, presents a project on trapping spotted lanternflies. Natalie, wearing a maroon dress over a white top, presents a project on transforming plastic waste into soil-enhancing compounds. The Mountain Vista Governor’s School logo, the EVHS logo, and the words “Regional Science Fair” appear in the lower left corner.

Students from Eastern View High School, participating through Mountain Vista Governor’s School (MVGS), earned top recognition at the Virginia Piedmont Regional Science Fair (VPRSF) held in Charlottesville on March 12, 2026.

Five juniors from the Mountain Vista Governors School Warrenton campus competed in this year’s event, and all five returned with awards, an impressive showing that highlights the strength of the region’s advanced academic programs. Notably, last year’s grand prize winner returned to the competition in a new role, serving as a judge for middle school participants.

Among this year’s honorees were two Eastern View High School students:

  • Jaxson Norrod (MVGS/Eastern View High School) received an Honorable Mention in Environmental, Earth, and Planetary Sciences, along with a $375 Regeneron Biomedical Science Award. His project, “Using the Attractions of Lycorma delicatula (Spotted Lanternfly) to Trap and Kill,” explored innovative methods to address the spread of the invasive species.

  • Natalie Ferlazzo (MVGS/Eastern View High School) also earned an Honorable Mention in Environmental, Earth, and Planetary Sciences for her project, “Transforming Plastic Waste into Soil-Enhancing Compounds,” which investigated sustainable solutions to plastic pollution.

Students participating in MVGS research programs are supported by experienced mentors, including Mrs. Cle LaMonica, a retired MVGS Physics and Research teacher, and Mrs. Stephanie Burke, a retired systems engineer from Lockheed Martin. Their guidance plays a critical role in helping students design, execute, and present high-level scientific research.

The Virginia Piedmont Regional Science Fair brings together top student researchers from across the region to showcase original projects in a wide range of scientific disciplines. Recognition at this level demonstrates both academic rigor and real-world application of STEM skills.

Culpeper County Public Schools congratulates Jaxson, Natalie, and all participating students on their outstanding achievements and continued dedication to academic excellence.
